What is Clinical Waste

Categories of Clinical Wastes

  1. Sharps (containing used or contaminated sharps in safe boxes)
  2. Culture & stocks from clinical laboratories
  3. Human and animal tissues/organs
  4. Infectious waste from strict isolation rooms
  5. Dressing and other waste dribbling and caked with blood
  6. Others

Sharps (Category 1) consist of used or contaminated sharps. These could cause physical injury as well as blood transmitted disease like H.I.V., Hepatitis B & Hepatitis C if not contained safely. (Insert Syringe Pic)

Category (2) & (4) Culture & stocks from laboratories and infectious waste from highly contagious diseases will spread without proper disposal and cause epidemic. (Insert Culture Pic)

It is imperative that proper and responsible management of clinical waste production, collection and disposal is solidly established in Hong Kong for the benefit of environmental protection and community health.
